The Big Problem with File Backup

Here’s a problem with file backup: it’s intangible.

Like many things in the IT world, backing up of computerized data is an ethereal concept. Network security, database migrations, remote access—all of these, including file backup, are Not Physically There in peoples’ minds. Groceries, wrought iron fencing, office furniture? We know what these things are. They’re ‘real’. We have a physical representation of them in our heads. We know what they are.

Stuff like offsite data backup and a firewall, on the other hand, disappears when we try to touch it in our minds. So it can be hard to see the value. Especially when nothing yet has gone wrong, it’s easy to say ‘Why do I need that?’

So you don’t get an inexpensive, reliable offsite file backup service in place. Hey, it’s understandable.

But here’s the BIG problem with file backup:

When you do lose your data, it becomes a very visceral, real problem indeed.

Frantic phonecalls start. New hardware needs to be bought and installed right away. Client information is missing. Sales data is gone. Professionals need to be brought on site.

Plenty of independent studies have shown that it costs tens of thousands of dollars just to re-enter a small amount of data. If you’ve got engineering drawings to replace, it’s even worse.

The finger-pointing begins.

This situation is no fun at all.

Now, it’s personal. This is very real, and an all-too-common experience. And it could have been completely avoided by choosing to be protected by an ‘intangible’ idea.
