December 2001

During the "busyness" of this time of year I get the rare chance to reflect on two things. First is the relationships we enjoy and second would be our progress. The friendship of those we serve is the foundation of our progress and this season affords us the opportunity to extend our best wishes to those whose friendship we value.

While we have built new relationships, whether it be clients, suppliers or contacts, we greatly appreciate the good will and support of many of our clients who have been with us, through thick and thin, for over ten years. We look forward to continued good relations in the future.

It is people and not technology that is the basis for our relationships and progress. While technology has changed, and vendors commitment to various technologies has diminished, our commitment to helping people use technology has not diminished.

With all of the stress and changes this year we would like to say Thank You and may you experience the happiness and the peace of this holiday season.

Developing an E-Commerce Website: A case study

The electronic exchange of buying products on the internet has become an attractive addition of service provided on a website, to win new customers. Using this powerful new medium, your business can benefit from increased sales, improved customer service and even give your business the edge over your competitors.

This particular web project was proposed to us by Ian David, the owner operator of Crafty Designs. Ian started his web venture back in October of 2000 where he purchased the name www.logcabintoys.com, as he wanted his header and domain name to match on all his packaging. Becoming extremely busy, the idea of a website was held off for a year, in the meantime his domain was already receiving hits.

In November of 2001, Ian contacted KDI to design and host his website. During his initial contact, Ian was given a list of information that KDI would need to start his website. On November 7, 2001, Ian met with one of our web designers and sales reps. During this first meeting it was very clear that Ian was well prepared. He came to the table with a clear concept of what he wanted for his site; including the layout, content and images he wanted incorporated into the site.

It was discussed that he wanted to not only target previous customers, but to target new customers as well, which included retailers. The goal was to have the website up and running in time for Christmas sales.

A storyboard was created to show the layout and navigation scheme. By having his content with him we were able to start on the website that same day.

Keeping the client closely involved enabled us to complete the site efficiently and quickly. Within four weeks www.logcabintoys.com was a functional e-commerce website.

The next step was to show Ian how to administer his website on his own, which included adding/deleting new products, viewing and changing status of orders as well as retrieving customers information and generating reports.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate the value of taking the measured steps towards developing an e-commerce website. Tasks that may have hindered the development of this website, in turn, were avoided due to the client having a clear concept of what he wanted. In the end we not only achieved the goal and purpose of this e-commerce website, we also exceeded the clients expectations
